Ion Rîmaru was a Romanian serial killer who terrorized the city of Bucharest between 1970-1971, earning him the nickname ‘’The Vampire of Bucharest’’. Ion grew up in a dysfunctional home where his mother was routinely beaten by his father, who was also later discovered to have been a serial killer. Once Ion entered adulthood, he followed into his father’s footsteps as a sadistic monster. Ion attacked restaurant waitresses who were usually alone or just returning from work. He struck in the dead of night, typically in odd weather conditions such as snowstorms, high winds, and freezing frog. His victims were hacked with axes and raped while unconscious and sometimes even dead. One surviving victim related how he’d poked several holes into his flesh and sucked blood out of them. 

On the day of Ion’s execution, he was tied to a post in a prison yard. He was erratic in movement, making it difficult for the firing squad to aim accurately at him. He had yelled at them, 

“Call my father, so he can see what’s happening to me! Make him come! He’s the only guilty one!” and “I want to live!” Ion eventually took several bullets to the back and died.
